What to look for in a dating app in India

  1. Real people. Fake and inactive profiles are the most common complaint. Look for mandatory verification, not just an optional badge.
  2. Control for women. Can women filter low-effort likes, hide their profile or photos, and decide who messages first?
  3. What's free. Many apps charge to see who likes you. Check what you get without paying, and whether paid plans renew automatically.
  4. Intentions. Can you say what you want (casual, serious, marriage) and see people who want the same?
  5. Privacy. Can you keep your profile away from family, colleagues or neighbours?
  6. Respect. Does the app let people filter by caste? Some do; Paire doesn't.

The apps

Paire

An Indian app where every like can carry a note, women set the rules (notes-only likes, I'll message first, incognito, private photos until match), and seeing who likes you is free. Every member must confirm a real email and pass a live selfie check before they can like or chat. No caste field. Paire Plus is a one-time pass from ₹20 that never auto-renews. It's newer and smaller than the global apps, starting in Delhi NCR and open across India. Best for: people who want fewer, better, verified matches. See features.

Tinder

The biggest global dating app, with a very large user base in Indian cities. Swipe-based, used for everything from casual to serious. Seeing who already likes you is part of its paid tiers. Best for: the largest pool and travel. Paire vs Tinder.

Bumble

Known for women making the first move in women–men matches; also has a mode for making friends. Its list of people who liked you is a paid feature. Best for: women who want to start every conversation. Paire vs Bumble.

Hinge

Profiles built around photos and prompts; you like a specific part of a profile, optionally with a comment. Popular with people looking for relationships. Best for: prompt-led conversations. Paire vs Hinge.

Aisle

An Indian app focused on serious relationships and marriage-minded dating, with a paid model for reaching people. Best for: people clearly looking for a long-term partner.

TrulyMadly

One of the longer-running Indian dating apps, with an emphasis on verification and safety. Best for: people who prefer an established Indian app.

Matrimony sites (Shaadi.com, BharatMatrimony, Jeevansathi)

Built for marriage, often with families involved in creating profiles and with community filters. Best for: arranged or semi-arranged marriage. If you want marriage-minded dating on your own terms and without caste filters, Paire's same intentions only setting is an alternative.

Our honest advice

Try one or two apps for a few weeks, write a real bio, and use your likes on people you'd actually like to meet. Whatever you choose, keep chats on the app until you trust someone, and never send money. Read dating app safety tips before your first date.
